As anyone who knows pits knows this is an extremely people friendly breed. All the pits I’ve known or had have always been almost to friendly for their own good. My puppy is starting to act funny and I was hopeing someone on here could help me out.
She’s a five and a half month old spayed female. She’s always been super people friendly but at the same time cautious around strangers. It’s like she loves meeting people but she will only approach them after I start talking with them and if they reach for her to fast she darts back behind me. We’ve worked so much on socializing her that I know it isn’t that.
Tonight I took her out for a walk and a neighbors was walking up the street. This neighbor has known her since we’ve gotten her was walking up the street and Athena’s ears perked up and she started acting like a dork (her typical reaction to people she knows). Anyway when the person leaned down to pet her Athena kept backing up then slowly going towards her, like she was scared. The people were great and just let her take her time and slowly approach them and then Athena started to play. My question is, is this normal behavior? Most pits I know will just bulldoze people over with love but Athena seems wary and reserved. Also this only happens when we’re walking around the neighborhood or in our front yard. When we let someone in our house she thinks it’s the greatest thing and if we have her out and about like at the petstore she’s super happy.
Another thing I was considering is my reaction to people. I’m always cautious when strangers approach (I’ve learned playing it safe is the best way to go) and since I have pretty sucky eye sight especially when it gets dark I’m always extra careful because in our neighborhood we have some pretty strange people I don’t trust. Could Athena be picking that up from me?
And finally, I’m really sorry this is so long, I was wondering about her attitude towards other people. As much as she may love someone whenever I’m around she’s stuck to me like glue and could care less about them. I’ve had a few friends mention that she’s very distant with them when I’m around. Whenever I’m out of sight she’s cuddling up to someone else. Any ideas with that?
The most I’ve gotten from someone else who has pits is that they said females tend to be more family oreinted and would rather be with their family than strangers. They also tend to be more protective over ‘their people’ then males so it may just be her way of watching me. I honestly can’t say I’ve ever heard that. She is very aloof with strangers or just other people. Except kids, holy cow if you get her around a kid she could care less about me and will follow them around and let them do anything to her.
Excuss my ignorance. I’ve really only had experience with males so I don’t know if what I’ve been told is correct and this is just the way a female pits is or if this is just her individual personality.
