We arrived on Grand Isle a little after 8 in the morning and were greeted by closed beaches, BP protest signs, and generally kind people who could not answer us. On a mission to interview citizens to see how charitable Americans can help, we were met mostly by genteel stonewalling from the military, contractors and government officials [...] Thick, sticky oil has reached the sugar-white sands of Pensacola Beach. It is heartbreaking to see the once-beautiful beach in ruins, and with no end in sight. The dead wildlife, the devastation to the local economy and many people’s livelihoods, as well as the loss of our beautiful beaches are just the tip of the iceberg. We have only just begun to feel the impact of this disaster, the magnitude of which is simply mind-boggling. [...] |
